DARKON was specified to deliver all downlight & track luminaires for BDO Melbourne, a commercial workplace within Collins Place, an iconic precinct originally designed by IM Pei and Bates Smart.
The lighting strategy was conceived as an extension of the architectural language, responding to Bates Smart’s ‘Purity of Geometry’ through disciplined alignment with grid ceilings and repeated spatial forms. Integrated illumination reinforces spatial clarity and visual order, supporting a calm and highly legible environment across the workplace. Linear elements track with ceiling geometry to guide movement through open work areas, meeting rooms and circulation zones while maintaining architectural restraint.
A cohesive solution incorporating NEKO luminaires, exclusively distributed by DARKON, provides refined illumination across all program areas. The 48V recessed track system forms the primary lighting infrastructure, enabling precise placement and flexibility while maintaining a clean architectural expression. Paired with high-performance downlighting and wall washing, the scheme delivers controlled beam distribution and optical consistency, with luminaire selection and optics endorsed within the Electrolight lighting schedule for their technical performance. The project reflects DARKON’s ability to integrate technically advanced lighting systems into complex commercial environments with clarity and precision.
Quietly resolved, the lighting performs at a high level while remaining visually unobtrusive, allowing the architecture to lead. This project represents a full-circle moment for DARKON, continuing our relationship with BDO following the delivery of feature lighting to their previous Melbourne workplace at Collins Square in 2016. Ongoing collaboration across workplace environments reflects a shared commitment to quality, performance and enduring spatial outcomes.
